Notre Dame Fighting Irish Basketball Details
The Fighting Irish have been on the court since 1897, and were part of the Big East Conference for many years before moving to the ACC in 2012. Much of the team’s recent history has been under long-time head coach Mike Brey, who has been with Notre Dame for 17 years, and holds a 382-187 all-time record with the Irish. Before Brey became coach, the Irish hadn’t been to an NCAA tournament since 1990. In Coach Brey’s first three seasons, he led the school to three tournaments in a row, from 2001-2003. The Fighting Irish play in the Purcell Pavilion in the Edmund P. Joyce Center. Since playing in Purcell Pavilion, they have had 44 winning seasons, five undefeated and four losing seasons at home. The Fighting Irish’s 35 NCAA Tournament appearances ranks them among the top programs in NCAA history, behind only eight other schools for most tourney bids all-time. Several Fighting Irish have gone on to play in the NBA, the most of which is Demetrius Jackson, who was drafted in 2016 by the Boston Celtics.
The Fighting Irish finished the 2016-2017 season second in the ACC to UNC, with a conference record of 12-6 and an overall record of 26-10. They were the fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament and beat Princeton in the first round, before falling to West Virginia in the second round. For the 2017-2018 season, they have a few new recruits joining the team. First, D.J. Harvey, a 6’6”, 185 pound guard from Maryland, has been recruited by Notre Dame the past few years and is a good fit for the Irish. He’s a tall guard with a diverse skillset, who should be able to make an impact immediately. He was ranked no. 47 on ESPN Top 100 recruits list. UConn transfer Juwan Durham will also be joining the Irish, and though he will sit out the upcoming season because of transfer rules, will be a great addition to the Irish the following season. This season Notre Dame will meet DePaul, Michigan State, and Indiana, a slate of matchups as tough as any in the school’s history.
