St. John's Red Storm Basketball Details

The St. John’s Red Storm, out of the Big East Conference, are led by former NBA Great Chris Mullin, who took over the team before the 2015-16 season and has struggled to get things going for the team. In 15-16, the Red Storm won just a single conference game and finished with an overall record of 8-24. Last season, St. John’s slightly improved, finishing 8th in the Big East (7-11) and an overall record of 14-19. The Red Storm have some solid players but have struggled on the recruiting front. Returning from last season is guard Shamorie Ponds, who averaged 17.4 points, as well as fellow freshman Marcus LoVett, who averaged almost 16 points per game. The Red Storm backcourt is set, especially with incoming freshman Bryan Trimble, who should provide solid shooting off the bench.

The Red Storm certainly need the incoming freshmen to step up, as the team lost guard Malik Ellison to Pittsburgh, Darien Williams to Nevada, as well as Federico Mussini and Richard Freudenberg who both went overseas. Along with Trimble, St. John’s will welcome freshman Sidney Wilson and transfers Marvin Clark and Justin Simon will suit up for the first time in the Red Storm uniform. After a disappointing second year under Chris Mullin, the hopes for a better showing in the Big East Conference aren’t extremely high. With tough opponents like Villanova, Butler, and Creighton, it’s going to be hard for this team to compete at a high level.

St. John’s plays out of Carnesecca Arena for smaller games, and will pack famous Madison Square Garden in New York for games with high expected attendance.
